It is often said –
judge a man by his shoes. And so be it! To think of it, you can actually be put
off if you see someone wearing unpolished, dirty, torn or unshapely footwear.
Be it shoes (formal and informal), sports shoes, sandals, chappals, juttis, bellies,
stilettoes, or any other footwear, the right one surely defines the persona of
the person wearing it.
While in earlier days,
footwear was simple and minimal, in design and texture and materials used, with
time, the same became elaborate and experimental. It was more about making a
fashion statement with footwear than just clothes. And so, with the emergence
of fashion institutes, footwear courses became an important part of the
curriculum. And footwear course acquired its own identity with elaborate footwear design courses in institutes that were promoting and teaching fashion.
Many premier fashion
institutes sprang up all across the country and some like FDDI made a special
name for themselves. Providing a bachelors’ degree and even a masters in these
specialized courses like footwear design was a very new field for the young
college going crowds. But because fashion grew and gradually developed into an
industry, footwear, an integral part of the fashion world, too became
important.
While earlier on when
the course was introduced, it was not much sought after. Fashion – that was
defined by apparel and styling – ruled the roost. But soon, footwear design course began to gain precedence. It was a specialization, after all.
While only a few
colleges and institutes offered the course when it was initially introduced,
soon some major institutes across the country began to highlight the course and
it has since become much sought after.
Gaining inspiration
from the likes of Jimmy Choo, the fashion fraternity made footwear as important
in fashion as apparels, accessories and the rest. And with the introduction of
computers, designing became fun. It would no longer be limited to working with
a pencil and colour pencils to put a design on paper. The computer tools with
their plethora of options and several software made footwear designing as any
other – interesting and exciting.
At FDDI, students get a
chance to learn footwear designing from talented teachers and learn to innovate
and create under experienced supervision. The footwear design courses here
encourage the youth to experiment with the weirdest in design.
